THE VILLA'S FUTURE IS HERE!
July 1, 2008
Dear Villa community,
Today the Villa Augustina School begins anew! Based on the strength of ninety years of leadership by the Religious of Jesus and Mary and on the effort of the entire school community, the Villa today enters its future as a lay-run, independent Catholic school.
It is our pleasure to announce the accomplishment of the final important steps of the Villa's successful transition. Last week, the new school officially received from the IRS its status as a non-profit organization, or 501(c)(3). This tax-exempt status is the designation required by the IRS that allows the Villa to receive the generous monetary donations that have been pledged. This status also makes the school eligible to receive any funds provided by granting agencies that support non-profit educational institutions.
The Villa Augustina Leadership Transition Team and the new officers of Saint Claudine Villa Academy Corporation have signed all of the legal documents required for the transition and purchase of the Villa, and the school will exist under its new ownership beginning July 1, 2008.
VALTT, which has been functioning as an interim Board of Directors since January, ceased to exist on June 21, when the full Saint Claudine Villa Academy Corporation Board of Directors met for the first time. The new Board of Directors is a thirteen-member board consisting of the Principal Charles Lawrence, Father John Quinn, Sister Pauline Ayotte, Father Mathias Durette, O.S.B., Tom Szopa, Denise Jobe, Carol Barrett, John Turner, Greg Tracy, Mark Cronin, Jeff Photiades, Tim Mark as the parent representative, and a Home and School representative. This group will govern the day-to-day operations of the school, which will do business under the name Villa Augustina School.
We know you all share our delight in this announcement: The school is ours, and we are permitted to call it Villa Augustina School!
This year we have had much to celebrate: most recently, the eighth-graders' graduation and the Villa's ninetieth birthday. This year, Rosary Hall saw the Fiftieth Jubilee of Sisters Jeannine and Pauline, and the "all-plaid" student-teacher tribute to Mr. Daniels. At these events, our children have continually expressed their deep joy to be Villa students. This year, too, we've all been holding our breath for so long, afraid that there might be no more Rosary Hall masses, basketball games, Saints' processions or talent shows. We feared that June 30, 2008 might be the final day of the Villa's long history. Instead, June 30 marked the Villa's purchase and transfer to a new organization, and July 1 is the birthday of the Villa's new life as a Catholic school that holds fast to its old, traditional mission of academic excellence and loving service.
In February, Father Jonathan, O.S.B. guided us with these words: "Pray as if everything depended on God. Work as if everything depended on you." Accepting this advice with zeal, the Villa community accomplished goals that appeared, at best, unrealistic, and, at worst, impossible. VALTT would like to thank you one more time, knowing that our words fall far short of honoring your support in the way that it deserves.
Thank you for the gift of your faith and hard work. Thank you for attending meetings, asking important questions, offering feedback, and for volunteering your talents and time. Thank you for pounding the pavement to drum up supporters, advertisers, and new students. Thank you for being patient. Thank you for re-enrolling. Thank you for never wavering in your commitment. Thank you for your prayers. Thank you for Believing!
We thank the Religious of Jesus and Mary for their legacy, their trust in us and their dedication to Catholic education. We thank God for his great blessings on this school, its staff and on our children.
The first line of the Memorare prayer has often nourished us throughout this difficult process: "Oh, most Blessed Virgin Mary, never was it known that anyone who came to you for help was left unaided." Though uncertain, and, at times, overwhelmed, our community has been inspired by the confidence that our knock would be answered and God would lead us to find what we so longingly have sought.
With all these blessings, we look to the future with excitement and vision. Let us continue to work together for the Villa in faith and love-today, this fall, and for years to come.
Sincerely,
The Villa Augustina Leadership Transition Team
